There is also a range of sporting activities to be enjoyed in the vicinity. A number of superb golf courses provide a welcome to visitors and there is also tennis, fishing, biking and horse riding.
Boats can be hired from several places if you fancy exploring the quiet backwaters off the intercoastal waterway. This extends for many miles from Tampa Bay south to Boca Grande.
Sarasota is the cultural
centre of the area with visitor attractions such as the Ringling Museum,
Mote Marine sealife centre and Marie Selby tropical gardens, several art
galleries and theatres.
There are numerous
wildlife reserves within a short drive. The biggest is Myakka River
State Park where alligators and many birds abound, whilst Oscar Scheerer Park
offers several walks in the wilderness.
Exotic islands such as
Boca Grande, Sanibel and Captiva are also not far away. For the more
energetic, Disney theme parks around Orlando are less than a two hour drive away,
making them a practical day visit.
